Did you know that when an Air Baltic flight is delayed — or worse, cancelled — you may be entitled to compensation? Under EU 261/2004, passengers have the right to a payout.

Your right to compensation under EU 261/2004

EU 261/2004 is your best friend when flights inside the European Union go wrong. If your flight is delayed by more than three hours, cancelled, or you’re denied boarding, you may be entitled to financial compensation. The rules cover every flight departing from the EU and every flight operated by a European carrier.

The rules also give you the right to information about your rights, plus refreshments, phone access during a delay, and in some cases overnight accommodation.

Air Baltic compensation for a delayed flight

If your Air Baltic flight is delayed by more than three hours, you can claim compensation directly from the airline or hand it to Refundio. Keep every document tied to your flight — boarding passes and the delay confirmation — you’ll need them for the claim.

If things get more complicated (for example, the delay makes you miss a connecting flight), you’re entitled to compensation for the missed connection too.

Air Baltic compensation for a cancelled flight

If your flight is cancelled, you’re entitled to compensation as long as you were told less than 14 days before departure. If the airline offers a rerouting that gets you to your destination at roughly the same time as the original flight, the payout may not apply. But if the alternative doesn’t work for you, or you decide to abandon the trip, you can claim a refund for the ticket plus compensation.

How much compensation am I entitled to?

Flight distanceCompensation per passenger
Up to 1,500 km (e.g. Riga – Berlin)€250
1,500–3,500 km€400
Over 3,500 km (e.g. Riga – New York)€600

These amounts are maximums. Your actual payout may be lower depending on the length of the delay and the total flight distance.

When you’re entitled to compensation

You’re entitled when a delay, cancellation or overbooking happens through no fault of your own. You’re not entitled when extraordinary circumstances hit — extreme weather, strikes outside the airline’s control, and the like.

You also won’t be paid if:

  • You were told about the cancellation more than 14 days before departure.
  • You were offered a rerouting that gets you to your destination within a reasonable time.
