Did you know you’re entitled to compensation when you’re hit with a delayed flight or a cancelled flight? It’s not only the big airlines — the rule covers smaller carriers like Air Nostrum too.
Your right to compensation under EU 261/2004
EU 261/2004 is your personal bodyguard in the world of air travel. If your flight is delayed, cancelled, or overbooked, you may be entitled to up to €600 in compensation. The rules cover every flight departing from the EU, plus every flight into the EU operated by a European carrier.
Air Nostrum compensation for a delayed flight
If your Air Nostrum flight is delayed by more than three hours, you may be entitled to compensation. The amount depends on the route distance and how long the delay was.
Worth keeping in mind: not every case is covered. If the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances outside anyone’s control (natural disasters, strikes), the entitlement likely doesn’t apply.
Air Nostrum compensation for a cancelled flight
A cancellation is a real letdown, but EU 261/2004 has you covered. If the airline tells you less than 14 days before departure, you’re entitled to compensation. If your flight was cancelled and you weren’t offered a rerouting in a similar time slot, you’re entitled to a financial payout.
How much compensation am I entitled to?
| Flight distance | Compensation per passenger |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km (within the EU, e.g. Madrid – Berlin) | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km (outside the EU, e.g. Madrid – New York) | €600 |
When you’re entitled to compensation
You’re entitled when the airline fails its obligations and doesn’t tell you in time, or when you face denied boarding. But if the cause was extraordinary circumstances — bad weather, a strike outside the airline’s control — there’s no payout.
You also aren’t entitled when:
- A routine technical fault is treated as part of normal operations.
- You were told about the cancellation more than 14 days before departure.
