Your right to compensation under EU 261/2004
Regulation EU 261/2004 covers flights departing from the EU, flights arriving into the EU on a European carrier, and flights between European countries. If your flight was delayed, cancelled, or you faced denied boarding, you can be entitled to up to €600. Two factors decide the amount: the length of the delay and the flight distance. If the airline proves the delay or cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances, it doesn’t have to pay.
Avianca compensation for a delayed flight
If you flew with Avianca and your flight is delayed by more than three hours, you can be entitled to compensation. The catch: the delay has to be the airline’s fault, not an extraordinary circumstance like bad weather or a strike.
Avianca compensation for a cancelled flight
Avianca should tell you at least 14 days before departure. If they don’t — and they can’t rebook you on another flight — you can claim compensation. Last-minute cancellation also entitles you to care on the airline: food, drinks, and a hotel if needed.

When you’re entitled and when you’re not
You’re entitled when the delay or cancellation is the airline’s fault. You’re not entitled when:
- You were told about the cancellation more than 14 days before departure.
- The delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances the airline couldn’t control.
- You showed up late and missed your flight.
