Your right to compensation under EU 261/2004
Regulation EU 261/2004 protects passengers — if your flight is delayed, cancelled, or overbooked, you can be entitled to compensation up to €600. The rule covers all flights departing from the EU and flights arriving in the EU on an EU-registered carrier.
You’re also entitled if the airline didn’t warn you about a flight change in time, or if you were a victim of denied boarding.
Brussels Airlines compensation for a delayed flight
If you flew with Brussels Airlines and your flight is delayed by more than three hours, you can be entitled to compensation. Check whether the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances — extreme weather, strikes outside the airline’s control — because in those cases no compensation is due.
Brussels Airlines compensation for a cancelled flight
If they tell you about the cancellation less than 14 days before departure, you can claim compensation. As with delays, the cancellation must not be caused by extraordinary circumstances.
How much compensation am I entitled to?
| Flight distance | Compensation per passenger |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km (e.g. London – Brussels) | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km (e.g. London – New York) | €600 |
These amounts are set by law and don’t depend on the ticket price — even on a cheap fare, you’re entitled to the full amount.
When you’re not entitled
You’re not entitled when:
- You were told about the cancellation more than 14 days before departure.
- The delay or cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances (natural disasters, strikes).
- You arrived at the airport late and missed your flight.
