British easyJet is one of Europe’s biggest carriers. It runs about 1,800 flights a day on average — so chances are your flight was operated by them. If your flight was delayed, cancelled, or you were denied boarding, this article is for you.

EU rules on compensation for a disrupted easyJet flight

EU Regulation 261/2004 protects passenger rights in cases of delayed flights, cancelled flights and denied boarding (overbooking). Thanks to the Regulation, passengers can claim financial compensation when their plans are unexpectedly disrupted and the airline is responsible.

When am I entitled to compensation on an easyJet flight?

EasyJet — cancelled flight

If easyJet cancels your flight and tells you less than 14 days before departure, you’re most likely entitled to compensation. The exception is extraordinary circumstances such as bad weather or an air traffic control strike — those don’t qualify.

EasyJet — delayed flight

You’re also entitled to compensation if your delayed easyJet flight landed at the destination more than 3 hours late. The arrival time is what counts, not the departure time. And the delay has to be down to easyJet.

EasyJet — overbooking

Denied boarding due to an overbooked aircraft qualifies for compensation. The conditions: you arrived at the airport in time, you had a valid ticket, and you didn’t give up your seat voluntarily.

EasyJet — missed connection

If a delayed easyJet flight made you miss a connecting flight, you’re entitled to compensation just as you would be for a cancelled flight — provided the flight departed from or landed in the EU.

How do I claim compensation?

If one of the situations above happened to you, you have two options.

The easiest way is to check your claim with Refundio. Fill in a short form and we’ll handle the rest — communication with easyJet, negotiation and, if needed, court action. We won’t ask you for a cent up front; we only take a fee if we win.

The other option is to contact easyJet directly. You fill in a form on their website and wait for a response — that can take weeks, and easyJet will most likely reject the claim first.

How much compensation am I entitled to?

Flight distanceCompensation per person
Up to 1,500 km€250
1,500–3,500 km€400
Over 3,500 km€600

For flights over 3,500 km between airports outside and inside the EU, the maximum is €600. Flights over 3,500 km within the EU sit in the €400 bracket. If the delay is under 4 hours, easyJet can halve the compensation on the longest flights (to €300).

When am I not entitled to compensation from easyJet?

Extraordinary circumstances — like a radar fault, heavy rain or a storm — release easyJet from the duty to pay. If you’re not sure whether the exception applies to you, check your case for free with Refundio.

EasyJet Airline Company — do you know which subsidiary operated your flight?

The easyJet group splits into three companies. When you claim, it matters which one operated your flight:

  • EZY or U2 — easyJet UK Limited
  • EJU — easyJet Europe Airline GmbH
  • EZS — easyJet Switzerland S.A.
