Your right to compensation under EU 261/2004

Regulation EU 261/2004 is the cornerstone of passenger rights. If your flight departs from the EU or is operated by a European carrier and it’s delayed, cancelled, or you face denied boarding, you’re entitled to up to €600. The rule also gives you a right to refreshments, communication, and accommodation if you need it.

Etihad Airlines compensation for a delayed flight

If you flew with Etihad Airlines and your flight is delayed by more than three hours, you can be entitled to compensation. The delay is measured at arrival, not departure. Etihad is known for its service, but even so, airline-caused delays happen.

Etihad Airlines compensation for a cancelled flight

If your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before the planned departure, you’re entitled to compensation. The catch: not every cancelled flight qualifies — if it was down to extraordinary circumstances, there’s no claim.

If it was cancelled because of technical issues or scheduling problems, you’re entitled to compensation, rerouting, and care.

How much compensation am I entitled to?

Flight distanceCompensation per passenger
Up to 1,500 km (e.g. London – Paris)€250
1,500–3,500 km (e.g. London – Madrid)€400
Over 3,500 km (e.g. London – Sydney)€600

When you’re not entitled

You’re not entitled when:

  • The delay or cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances (bad weather, strike).
  • The airline tells you about the cancellation at least 14 days before the planned departure.
  • They offer rerouting with a similar travel plan.
