Your right to compensation under EU 261/2004

Regulation EU 261/2004 protects passengers when something goes wrong in the air. If your EU flight was delayed, cancelled, or you faced denied boarding, you may be entitled to up to €600. The rules keep airlines honest and accountable.

Finnair compensation for a delayed flight

If you flew with Finnair and your flight ran 3 hours late or more, you may be entitled to compensation. You also have the right to care during the wait — food, drink, and a way to make calls. Just check that the delay wasn’t caused by extraordinary circumstances.

Finnair compensation for a cancelled flight

A cancellation can be a nightmare, but EU 261/2004 has your back. If passengers weren’t told at least 14 days ahead, they can claim compensation, rebooking or a refund.

How much compensation am I entitled to?

Flight distanceCompensation per passenger
Up to 1,500 km€250
1,500–3,500 km€400
Over 3,500 km€600

When you’re entitled and when you’re not

You’re entitled when the cancellation isn’t caused by extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather or strikes. Technical issues and overbooking can give rise to a claim. You’re not entitled when:

  • You were told about the cancellation more than 14 days before departure.
  • The delay or cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances outside the airline’s control.
