Your right to compensation under EU 261/2004

Regulation EU 261/2004 is the cornerstone of passenger rights in the EU. If your flight is delayed, cancelled, or you face denied boarding, you may be entitled to compensation. The rules cover every flight departing from the EU, plus flights operated by European carriers.


Iberia Airlines compensation for a delayed flight

If you flew with Iberia Airlines and your flight was delayed by more than three hours, you may be entitled to compensation. Just check that the delay wasn’t caused by extraordinary circumstances like severe weather or strikes — in those cases the entitlement doesn’t apply. Otherwise, compensation can run up to €600.


Iberia Airlines compensation for a cancelled flight

If Iberia Airlines cancels your flight, they have to tell you at least 14 days before departure. If they don’t, you’re entitled to compensation. The amount depends on the flight distance and how quickly they offered you a workable alternative. If you were rerouted with only a small delay, the payout can be cut by 50 %.

When you’re entitled and when you’re not

You’re entitled when:

  • Your flight is delayed by more than 3 hours.
  • Your flight is cancelled with less than 14 days’ notice.
  • You couldn’t board because of overbooking.

You’re not entitled when:

  • The delay or cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances.
  • You were told about the cancellation in time.
  • The delay was less than 3 hours.
