Your right to compensation under EU 261/2004

Regulation EU 261/2004 protects your rights when travel goes off the rails. If your flight is delayed or cancelled within the EU or with a European carrier like Lufthansa, you may be entitled to up to €600.

Lufthansa compensation for a delayed flight

If you flew with Lufthansa and your delayed flight landed more than three hours late, you’re entitled to compensation — as long as the delay wasn’t caused by extraordinary circumstances (severe weather, air traffic control strike).

Lufthansa compensation for a cancelled flight

If Lufthansa cancels your flight and tells you less than 14 days before departure, you’re entitled to compensation. The airline also has to offer either a replacement flight or a refund.

If you were denied boarding because of overbooking, the same rules apply — compensation is owed regardless of other exceptions.

How much compensation am I entitled to?

Flight distanceCompensation per passenger
Up to 1,500 km€250
1,500–3,500 km€400
Over 3,500 km€600

When you’re not entitled

You’re not entitled when you were told about the cancellation more than 14 days ahead, or when the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances Lufthansa couldn’t have controlled. Missed a connecting flight because of a Lufthansa delay? That’s also covered.

How to claim compensation from Lufthansa

You have two options. Try it yourself through the Lufthansa website, or check your claim with Refundio. Fill in our form and we handle the rest — from talking to the airline to court representation if it comes to that. Nothing to pay upfront.

What if Lufthansa rejects the claim?

If Lufthansa turns you down, contact Refundio. Our team has fought plenty of these cases. If Lufthansa still refuses after we step in, we’re not afraid to take it to court — at our cost, not yours.
