Your right to compensation under EU 261/2004

EU 261/2004 is a protective shield for passengers — when something goes wrong with your flight, you’re not on your own. The rules entitle you to financial compensation of up to €600 if you face a delayed flight, a cancelled flight, or denied boarding. They cover flights from any EU country and flights into the EU on a European carrier.

Virgin Atlantic compensation for a delayed flight

If you flew with Virgin Atlantic and your flight was delayed by more than three hours, you may be entitled to compensation. The delay can’t be down to extraordinary circumstances — bad weather, strikes. If the delay was caused by a technical fault or messy flight scheduling, you’re entitled to compensation.

Virgin Atlantic compensation for a cancelled flight

If Virgin Atlantic cancels your flight and tells you less than 14 days before departure, you’re entitled to compensation. Same rule as the delay: the cause can’t be extraordinary circumstances outside the airline’s control.

How much compensation am I entitled to?

Flight distanceCompensation per passenger
Up to 1,500 km (e.g. Prague – London)€250
1,500–3,500 km€400
Over 3,500 km (e.g. Prague – New York)€600

When you’re not entitled to compensation

You’re not entitled when:

  1. You were told about the cancellation more than 14 days before departure.
  2. The delay or cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances (extreme weather, airport system outage).
  3. You arrived at the airport late and missed the flight.
