Delayed or cancelled Wizz Air flight? What EU Regulation 261/2004 says
When flight operations are disrupted — a delay, a cancellation or denied boarding — passengers are left dealing with the fallout. EU Regulation 261/2004 protects those rights and lays down common rules on compensation.
How does EU 261/2004 apply to Wizz Air flights?
Under EU 261/2004 you’re entitled to compensation from Wizz Air in these cases:
- Delayed flight of 3 hours or more: if the delay wasn’t caused by extraordinary circumstances, you’re entitled to €250–€600 depending on flight distance.
- Cancelled flight: if Wizz Air told you about the cancellation less than 14 days before departure and it wasn’t an extraordinary circumstance, the same amounts apply.
- Denied boarding (overbooking): if you were denied boarding because the plane was overbooked and you didn’t volunteer to give up your seat, the same compensation applies.
Watch which company actually operated your flight
Wizz Air splits into four operating entities. EU 261 only applies if the flight departs from or lands in the EU and is operated by a company based in the EU.
| Departure | Arrival | Operator | EC 261 entitlement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prague | Barcelona | Wizz Air Hungary | Yes |
| Milan | Abu Dhabi | Wizz Air Abu Dhabi | Yes |
| Dubai | Vienna | Wizz Air Malta | Yes |
| Dubai | Vienna | Wizz Air Abu Dhabi | No |
Cancelled Wizz Air flight — when am I entitled to compensation?
If your Wizz Air flight was cancelled, you always have the right to a refund or a replacement flight. On top of that, you’re entitled to financial compensation if two conditions are met:
- The airline is at fault (not an extraordinary circumstance like bad weather).
- The cancellation was announced less than 14 days before departure.
Delayed Wizz Air flight — when am I entitled to compensation?
It’s similar for a delayed Wizz Air flight. The airline has to provide refreshments while you wait, and accommodation if there’s an overnight wait. Financial compensation kicks in when:
- The flight landed at the destination more than 3 hours late (the departure time doesn’t matter; landing does).
- The delay was caused by the airline’s fault, not an extraordinary circumstance.
How much am I entitled to?
| Flight distance | Compensation per person |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 |
On flights over 3,500 km with a delay of 3–4 hours, Wizz Air can cut the compensation by 50 % (to €300). You get the full €600 when the delay is over 4 hours.
Extraordinary circumstances — when there’s no entitlement
Extreme weather, security risks or air traffic control strikes release Wizz Air from the duty to pay. But it’s not always clear what counts as “extraordinary” — Wizz Air leans on this exception heavily. If you’re not sure, check your case for free with Refundio.
